This special section presents the impact, value, and limitations of the use of seismic velocities in seismic interpretation. In oil and gas exploration, the term seismic interpretation is usually associated with the definition of structural or reservoir properties from 2D or 3D seismic reflectivity images. Although in theory a seismic velocity model contains both geologic and petrophysical information, because of its relatively low resolution, its primary use has been as an intermediate product required to generate an accurate seismic reflectivity image.
