Seismic sedimentology is the use of seismic data in the study of sedimentary rocks and the processes by which they were formed. Techniques used in seismic sedimentology cover the profile-based seismic sequence and facies analysis, 90° phase shaping, seismic lithologic inversion and attribute analysis, and slice-based seismic geomorphological and depositional element analysis, among others. Seismic sedimentology has found applications in reservoir characterization, especially in the prediction of nonmarine and thin-bed reservoirs. Nevertheless, challenges remain.
