The Woodford Shale is one of the most important and prolific unconventional gas and oil shale resources in the United States. The Woodford is an organic-rich, siliceous mudstone deposited during Late Devonian and Early Mississippian time in most parts of Oklahoma and in limited areas of north Texas. The main oil producing areas of the Woodford Shale in Oklahoma are termed the South Central Oklahoma Oil Play (SCOOP) and the Sooner Trend Anadarko Canadian and Kingfisher (STACK) play, both of which are within the Anadarko basin.
