Diffraction imaging is gaining momentum as a possible tool to map discontinuities such as fracture swarms, corridors, and small offset faults in unconventional reservoirs prior to drilling.

The amplitudes of diffracted waves are inherently much weaker than those of the specular reflections and are very often lost during conventional processing. Diffractions are generated from local structural and lithological elements in the subsurface that are of a size that is comparable to the wavelength. These events are usually ignored during processing, so these elements are indirectly identified during interpretation and not through direct measurements.
