Advances in the understanding of salt tectonics generally result from interpretations of modern seismic data, field studies of exposed salt basins, experimental and numerical modeling, and cross-section restoration. In this special section of Interpretation, a journal emphasizing the mutual contributions of geology and geophysics, we focus on the geological analysis of both 2D and 3D seismic data in furthering our understanding of salt-related deformation. The eight papers presented here offer a sampling of the broad scope of investigations currently being undertaken within both industry and academia. We hope that readers will find them useful in their own work.
