The use of microseismic data in unconventional resource exploration has grown tremendously over the past decade. While there is a long history of its use in the mining and geothermal industries, its routine application in exploration has grown alongside the proliferation of tight ‘unconventional’ plays. From simple ‘dots in a box’ interpretation to full moment tensor inversion, it has become recognized as a fundamental tool to complement 3D seismic for fully characterizing unconventional resources. Despite this explosion of its application, some skepticism remains around how to interpret the results. Through publication of case studies in a journal such as Interpretation...
