The interpretation value from amplitude variation with offset (AVO) has increased significantly in the past few decades. At first, AVO was successfully applied in the 1980s to detect gas in California sandstones. Use of AVO spread across the United States and other countries but was most widely employed in the Tertiary sandstones of the Gulf of Mexico, where application of the technology was focused primarily on the direct detection of hydrocarbons for exploration.
