The 1977 publication of seismic stratigraphy papers by Peter Vail, Bob Mitchum, and co-workers in AAPG Memoir 26 was a major milestone in several applied (petroleum and mineral exploration and development) and fundamental (stratigraphy and sedimentary geology) geoscience fields. In subsequent decades, seismic stratigraphy has become a standard tool for resource exploration, especially in remote areas with no or limited 3D seismic data coverage. In classic seismic stratigraphy, geoscientists seek stratigraphic information from a qualitative analysis of seismic reflection sections. Variations in seismic reflection patterns, amplitudes, frequencies, and continuity are used to group regions with distinctive appearance or facies. Geologists...
