Though more widely known for his contributions to marine geology and to development of the theory of plate tectonics, Robert S. Dietz (1914–1995) made important scientific contributions to the recognition of impact structures, particularly of ancient, eroded impact scars on Earth (astroblemes). He pursued his interest in impact structures largely outside of his official duties and generally based his conclusions on very low-budget efforts—limited field work, study of air photographs, correspondence and visits with like-minded workers, and consultation of the literature.
