The South African and international geoscience communities were, sadly, left much poorer by the passing of Professor Nicolas Johannes Beukes on 9 January 2023. Prof. Nic, as he was known to his many students, is survived by his wife, Tiekie, four children, their partners, and six grandchildren. He leaves behind a legacy of world-class research and researchers that greatly benefited from his skill as a scientist, ability as a mentor and kindness and compassion as a human being. His passing was a great loss, but his mark on geology and the people with whom he worked will never be lost....
