This special issue of the South African Journal of Geology honours the scientific contribution made by Carl Anhaeusser to the knowledge of Barberton geology, and to the understanding of Archaean crustal evolution in general. It also recognizes his editorial contributions, not only to this journal, but to many other works published by the Geological Society of South Africa. In a scientific career that spans some six decades, Carl continues to be scientifically productive and remains engaged with research in the Barberton Mountain Land, and elsewhere, to this day.
