In 1971 the South African Committee for Stratigraphy (SACS) drew up a code of stratigraphic terminology and nomenclature, and used this as the basis to subsequently present a comprehensive outline of South African stratigraphy (SACS, 1971, 1980). Units which were not included in the 1980 Handbook were formally described in the periodicals known as the “Lithostratigraphic Series” (detailed descriptions) and the “Catalogue” (abridged descriptions), published by the Council for Geoscience and its predecessor, the Geological Survey of South Africa.
