The authors are to be commended on this meticulous addition to the data-base and interpretation of the structural controls of hydrothermal lode gold mineralisation in the Barberton Greenstone Belt. However the conclusion that all mineralised structures resulted from extension rather than compression may be too facile. In the general polyphase complexity of Archaean greenstone belt deformation the recognition and measurement of kinematic indicators such as slickensides is often fraught with difficulty.
