Synopsis
Three to four footprints, including a tridactyl pes print attributed to a small bipedal theropod, are recorded from the Valtos Sandstone Formation (Bathonian, Middle Jurassic) on the Strathaird peninsula, southern Skye. The prints are preserved in a very fine-grained, well-sorted, silty sandstone that was deposited in a lagoonal, microtidal flat palaeoenvironmental setting, associated with a bay-head delta system. Two of the prints may form a short, narrow trackway reflecting a walking to gently trotting gait of a small theropod animal. These are the first dinosaur footprints recorded from southern Skye.
