Summary
Four sites in the London area are described where sandy gravel overlies London Clay. On two of these sites the unexpected occurrence of deep steep-sided natural depressions in the surface of the London Clay gave rise to delays during the construction of civil engineering works. On the other two the depressions were discovered during the initial site investigations and appropriate measures for dealing with them were taken in good time.
