The site investigation carried out for an oil storage tank at a distribution terminal near Bridg-water, Somerset showed that a surface foundation could be adopted provided that the first filling of the tank was controlled to allow sufficient gain in strength of the foundation soils. The design of the instrumented flexible pad foundation, and the behaviour of the foundation during the controlled test filling of the tank with water, and when subsequently filled with oil, is described.
