We are familiar with the sites mentioned by Barton & Garvey (2011) from site visits and by working through a series of back-analyses of the sections presented in their paper. We wish to bring some observations to the authors’ attention, and seek their views.

First, the basal shear surfaces of the Hoskin’s Gap, Hoskin’s Gap West and Central Amenity area slips are all shown in the figures of the paper to have occurred along bedding planes situated in the F and H horizons of the Barton Clay, but at different although closely spaced stratigraphic positions.
