Abstract
Faulted rock mass response to glaciation, thermal loading and earthquake is modelled numerically by the distinct element method. The modelling results are applied to the stability and safety of a potential nuclear waste repository in hard rock. The fault deformations caused by glaciation are significantly influenced by the initial stress conditions. The thermal loading and the earthquake response cause deformation of faults and are likely to influence the groundwater flow.
