The results of field vane shear tests and Mackintosh probings in the soft clay of Obhor Sabkha, Saudi Arabia have been compared and correlated. It is observed that Mackintosh probing is less affected by the presence of gypsum crystals than vane testing and that an approximately linear correlation is possible between the undrained shear strength of this clay measured by a field vane and the M-value obtained from Mackintosh probing.
