Many readers around the world will have good reason to be grateful to Dr Chandler for his editorship of the Quarterly Journal, and I am sure that they would wish me to thank him on their behalf for the excellent work he has done in maintaining the Quarterly Journal as a vehicle of international reputation for the publication of geotechnical and hydrogeological work. Dr Chandler assumed his responsibilities as editor in 1978 and the first issue under his charge was the very successful Proceedings of the Conference on Engineering Problems associated with Ground Conditions in the Middle East. In 1979 he guided the response of the Journal to the needs of the members of the Hydrogeological Group and since that time there has been a growing commitment to provide space for the publication of hydrogeological work. Since 1978 there has developed a tendency in the Society to sponsor thematic meetings, the proceedings of which have been accommodated by its Journals. These present the Editors with special problems and we are fortunate that Dr Chandler succeeded in providing us with the proceedings for the important meetings on Engineering Geological Mapping for Planning, Design and Construction; Coastal Engineering; Stability of Concrete Aggregates; Engineering Geology Applied to Construction; and Mudrocks of the UK. In addition he maintained a general mixture of subjects for other issues that sustains the broader interests of the
