Abstract
Report of a meeting of the Tethyan Working Group, held at the University of Edinburgh, on 25–26 April 1991. The conveners were I. R. Sharp, T. Ustaomer, P. Degnan, A. H. F. Robertson and J. E. Dixon.
The latest in a long established series of Tethyan Workshops took place over a two day period in The Grant Institute at Edinburgh University. The purpose of the workshop was to provide a forum for the presentation of recent and ongoing work in the Tethyan realm, with postgraduate research being particularly featured. The Workshop was attended by about 60 geologists and geophysicists, with a strong input from foreign institutes, ensuring a good level of discussion on the evolution of the complex Tethyan region. Over the years it has become apparent that only by combining a number of geological disciplines and techniques can major progress be made in the Tethyan realm and this was reflected in the talks presented at the meeting.
G. S. Boulton opened the Workshop and introduced the first chairman, R. Hall (University College London). The first talk of the day was presented by A. H. F. Robertson (Edinburgh University) who outlined the work that has been carried out at Edinburgh over the last decade or so and its contribution towards solving some of the longstanding problems of Tethyan geology in the Mediterranean region.
