The Neogene sediments of SE Spain are dominated by gravity-flow deposits, ranging from millimetre-scale dilute turbidites to kilometre-scale olistholiths. Details of the Neogene sequences at Finestrat, Alcoy and Fontanars provide examples of responses to periodic tectonic events in a variety of background settings. The main control on sedimentation in each area was the episodic rise of Triassic gypsiferous mudstone diapirs. This probably resulted from periodic regional extension and compression due to contraction and spreading of the Alboran Sea marginal basin.
