Cover: An Antarctic camp in the Friis Hills, Transantarctic Mountains, Antarctica. The camp was home for a team of geologists and drillers who used a Webster Drilling HPP-150 drill rig and chilled compressed air system to recover an 80-m-thick sequence of middle Miocene glacial-fluvial and glacial-lacustrine sediments from frozen ground. The camp is located on a 14-million-year-old surface at ~1300 m above sea level, across which cobble- to boulder-sized granite and dolerite erratics and ventifacts are scattered. At 2010 m, Mount Brearly (midground left) is the southwesternmost peak in the Kukri Hills, and at 4025 m, Mount Lister (background right) is the highest peak in the Royal Society Range. See “East Antarctic Ice Sheet variability during the middle Miocene Climate Transition captured in drill cores from the Friis Hills, Transantarctic Mountains” by Chorley et al., p. 1503–1529.
