The variance of channel direction along 36 meandering rivers is closely but nonlinearly related to sinuosity. Variances are greater than for sine-generated curves of the same sinuosity but are well predicted by assuming a normal direction distribution. This relationship may be useful in stochastic meander modeling and for estimating paleochannel sinuosity from fragmentary meander traces.
