Abstract

Hydraulic geometry exponents may be used to discriminate between types of river section. This is illustrated by a discriminant analysis of data from riffle and pool sections. The complexity of most natural channels, however, precludes the use of a single index to cover a wide range of discharges. This is demonstrated in an analysis of several width-discharge curves defined up to, but not beyond, bankfull stage.
