Abstract

Hsu's (1966) three-axis representation of finite strain is compared with the more usual plot of In (maximum-intermediate strains) versus In (intermediate-minimum strains). Hsu's scheme is extended to accommodate volume change, and its application to graphical methods of determining strain from either three-dimensional or planar measurements on distributions of passive ellipsoidal markers is discussed.
