Abstract

Stepwise discriminant function analysis has been applied to 115 samples of shale from the Cincinnatian Series. Six mineralogic and textural parameters were selected to characterize each of the three shale units examined. Three parameters—weight percent of sand fraction, weight percent of quartz silt, and parts per 10 of illite—enable reconstruction of the a priori selected classification scheme with a classification efficiency of 87 percent. The three shale units are mineralogically and texturally distinct, and a consideration of shale petrology in future stratigraphic analysis of the Cincinnatian Series in Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky is strongly advocated.
