Abstract
A classification is proposed that permits emphasis of the relative importance of lateral-slip and dip-slip components by rank-ordering the adjectives pertaining to the components. For example, a fault with right reverse slip would have a major component of reverse slip and a minor component of right-lateral slip, while a fault with reverse right slip would have a major component of right-lateral slip and a minor component of reverse slip. Provisions are also made for designation of essentially pure dip slip, strike slip, and oblique slip.
