Late Cretaceous Age of Strata Mapped as “?Matilija Formation” (Late Eocene), Lompoc Quadrangle, Santa Barbara County, California

Strata mapped as “?Matilija Formation” (late Eocene) by Dibblee (1950) are Late Cretaceous in age and in actuality represent the Jalama Formation. Calcareous nannoplankton and benthonic foraminifers indicate a late Campanian–early Maastrichtian age, equivalent to the Tetralithus trifidus zone (nannoplankton). A “Franciscan” terrain provenance for these sediments is indicated by the presence of grains of red and black chert and serpentinite.
