Abstract

Foraminifers, molluscs, corals, tunicates, and other organisms construct skeletal parts of elongate carbonate crystals. Observations of both artificial material and Holocene Bahamian sediment show that the crystals can be freed to the sediment as the skeleton disintegrates. The other organic sources must be considered when optical identifications of small carbonate particles are attempted.
