Magadi-type chert, that is, chert which is believed to have formed from a hydrous sodium-silicate precursor such as magadiite, has been identified in eight formations, ranging in age from Jurassic to Pleistocene. The chert indicates the recurrence of rather distinctive geochemical conditions, such as those that exist in alkaline lakes, from at least the Jurassic to Pleistocene.
