Abstract

The review of the Narizian and Ulatisian benthonic foraminiferal Stages of California by Steineck and Gibson (1971) contains undocumented assumptions concerning the correlation of the Stages. Published data are misquoted or misinterpreted. Conclusions are drawn which do not follow from the data presented. The planktonic faunules reported by Steineck and Gibson are compatible with the foraminiferal Stages of Mallory (1959); no time transgression of either benthonic or planktonic foraminiferal zonations is indicated from the data they present. The Narizian plus the lower Refugian Stages are equivalent to upper Eocene in California usage. The very precise assignments of Steineck and Gibson such as “late early Eocene to early middle Eocene” for the Ulatisian Stage are without basis in either fact or principle.
