Abstract

Ramsay's (1967) method for determining numerically the axis of a cylindrical fold leads erroneous results when the plunge of the axis is low and when the poles to the folded surface have a significant scatter about the plane normal to the fold axis. Watson's (1960) method should be followed. Two of three methods used to calculate numerically the axis of a conical fold also give erroneous results. A new method similar to that proposed by Kelley (1968) has the advantage of providing a statistical test of whether the fold is conical or not.
