Abstract

An approach similar to that previously used to calculate strain due to twinning in calcite can be used for dynamic analysis of calcite twin lamellae. Using the (second order) tensor transformation formula, the principal stresses for each twin set (the compression and extension axes of dynamic analysis) are rotated into thin-section coordinates forming a bulk stress tensor. Principal stresses and their orientations can then be calculated by means of taking the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the bulk stress tensor. The relative magnitudes and orientations of calculated principal stresses accurately reflect the distribution of the compression and extension axes.
