Abstract

Shear strength parameters of both undisturbed and remolded samples, engineering index properties, and mineralogy of nine Puerto Rican Oxisols and Ultisols grading to Oxisols are described. Cohesion, dry density, activity and mineralogy exhibit systematic variations which relate to parent rock and amount of precipitation under which the soils developed. This observation supports the concept of previous workers who suggest an engineering classification of tropical soils based on degree of weathering and the parent rock type.
