For a small upland catchment in the Pennines, measurements of discharge, channel shape, and bedload movement have been combined in an attempt to relate hydraulic geometry characteristics with that fraction of the coarse bedload which, under prevailing hydrological conditions, is capable of movement. Different combinations of the exponents “b,” “f,” and “m,” relating respectively to the rates of increase of width, depth, and velocity with discharge, are related to varying rates of increasing and decreasing competence.
