Abstract
Some hypotheses of Basin and Range horst and graben structure infer a regional extension layer at shallow crustal depths. Geophysical evidence for a crustal low-velocity zone, in conjunction with geological data, indicate that decreased rigidity of the seismologically discernable zone explains postulated regional extension.
