Abstract

After burrowing organisms evolved and began to oxidize reduced carbon in sediments, photosynthesis could no longer add oxygen to the earth's atmosphere. The widespread occurrence of laminated pelitic rocks indicates that burrowing organisms evolved about 700 m.y. ago. Subduction of oceanic crustal plates also may have disposed of some small amount of reduced carbon.
