Abstract

Surface textures of fresh-water sand grains were studied with the scanning electron microscope. Mechanical and solution features are easily studied with this instrument because replication is not necessary and more grains can be observed in a short time. Heavy mineral grains were also examined and an attempt made to relate surface characteristics to mineralogy. This instrument should find wide application in investigations of depositional sequences of clastic deposits.
