Abstract

Seismograms of S phases recorded at Lubbock, Texas, from earthquakes near the Texas-Louisiana border are nearly identical to the S phases recorded at Bermuda which are diagnostic of oceanic upper-mantle structure. The Lubbock S phases are not at all like S phases normally recorded which have traveled beneath the continent; therefore, they may indicate extensive sedimentary filling of the Gulf of Mexico.
