Abstract
Abdel-Gawad and Kerr (1963) conclude that mottled alteration of basal Chinle beds on the Colorado Plateau was caused by hydrothermal solutions that also introduced hypogene uranium minerals into Triassic and Jurassic strata. In contrast, the author of this discussion believes that field evidence indicates the mottled alteration to be due to ancient soil forming processes and that there is no genetic relationship between these phenomena and the subsequent passage of uranium-bearing solutions through the rocks.
