Abstract

It is concluded, from a three-dimensional least-squares analysis of the distribution of the approximately 500 active volcanoes, that the volcanic, seismic, and other tectonically active features of the earth lie along a world-wide system of belts which may be defined approximately by the great-circle traces of three mutually orthogonal planes passing through the center of the earth.
