The factors contributing to development of many different geological phenomena can be systematized in terms of process-response (cause and effect) models. A modern beach and a granitic complex are used to illustrate the application of such models. A method is described whereby correct and incorrect conceptual process models may be differentiated when the actual processes involved cannot be observed.
