Abstract

Many geologists are unaware of the extent to which ambiguous and inconsistent terminology limits effective communication with the uninitiated, particularly in elementary teaching—the gateway through which the coming generation of geologists must enter. Good public relations and the ever-growing need for greater efficiency in teaching and in learning require increased thoughtfulness in the use of our terminology and constant effort toward its improvement.
