Abstract
Recent statistical developments permit evaluation of two-dimensional compositional variability in granitic plutons. These methods are extended to include the effect of vertical variation and are applied to analysis of specific gravity data from a small pluton in the Sierra Nevada, California. A strong positive correlation of this variable with elevation is established and suggests the importance of vertical compositional variation in granitic plutons.
