Abstract

Lipson's companion paper on the potassium-argon dating of sedimentary rocks is discussed. Some limitations in the present geological time scale are considered. The sedimentary minerals to which K-A dating may be applied and methods used in the preparation of glauconite for analysis are described. Possible errors due to contamination, argon inheritance, and argon loss by diffusion are discussed. Evidence by Gentner and co-workers for argon diffusion in sylvite is reviewed critically.
