Abstract
Three hypotheses of quartz orientation in tectonites are considered, based on twinning, translation, and fracture. Emphasis is placed on the fracture hypothesis, following the ideas of Griggs and Bell. An attempt is made to apply it to tectonites showing ac-girdles and oblique girdles, using published diagrams and also a series of new ones. The correlation is instructive, but is only partially successful.
