An early systematic evaluation of the stratigraphy and paleosols of the eolian sand was conducted by Blair et al. (1990), who named the Q1–Q4 units. Subsequently, the soil geomorphology of the sand sheet was described by Monger (1993), who applied names and sequences of geomorphic surfaces, alluvium, and soils from the Rio Grande valley to the Bolson sand sheet.
