The attempt by Wilkinson et al. (2003) to quantitatively assess the presence or absence of “high-frequency” cyclic depositional patterns in the Pennsylvanian cyclothems described by Wanless (1957) is welcomed for the very reasons that are stated in their thought-provoking paper. My discussion is restricted to four topics: (1) resolution of apparent correlation problems; (2) stratal order and the cyclothem definition; (3) the suitability of the western Illinois strata for the quantitative assessment; and (4) the methodology for classifying the marine lithofacies.
