In the accompanying discussion, Benn has argued that we did not provide the appropriate context for discussing the results of our ring-shear study of till-fabric development. We thank him for summarizing his important field work (Benn, 1995; Benn and Evans, 1996, 1998) and are encouraged that the results of our laboratory studies agree with some of his field interpretations.
